Draft - Grid Test & 500 text

The recent Haiti earthquake seen the lost of a estimate 220,000 lifes. This monument is designed as a memorial to commemorate these lifes and also to symbolize the unity of nations gathered to help the remainder of the population. The main feature of The Vitra Monument is the symbol of the cross. The cross is a symbol that is used in many cultural as a sign of life, fertility, and is predominantly used as a symbol to represent Christianity. It is formed by individual blocks at different heights to accomplish the structure. It resembles the shockwaves of earthquake, shattering the earth and its standing structure, as symbolize by the maze-like structure around the crosses.

The material used in this monument are mainly concrete. Concrete gives an aesthetics of solid, firm, to used this texture on a uneven block terrain gives a sense of chaos and destruction. Yet the concrete on the cross symbol is still whole and complete suggests the hope is not yet gone.

The blue glass texture is used to give the monument a modernity touch, as the one of the flaw in the Vitra Design Museum is that the materials are too blend and dull, although effective, it lacks the modernized style of a design museum.

The block terrain is inspired by the “Lego” project of the Bjarke Ingels Group architectural firm and the Jewish Memorial in Berlin. The Lego towers is an apartment complex utilizes the modularity and rationality of the Danish Modernistic building tradition to create a new kind of expressive architecture.

The Jewish Memorial in Berlin is a memorial designed for death during the Holocaust. It is designed by a New York architect, Peter Eiseman, after he won the design competition for the monument.

Draft - Layar Model

This is the initial low poly version of my model
For material, I tried to use material that relates to the Vitra Design Museum. The concrete floor tiles, white marble walls, with a quartz material on the top.

I used the vray for sketchup material editor to add reflection, refraction to imitate real marble statue, also a bump map to add a realism effect

I brightened up the colour of all material and attempted to soften the edges for the curvilinear blocks, unfortunately some of the edges are still sticking out.
As for material,I looked at the previous and the colour theme of the model is very dull and blend, so I altered the ground texture to a grass texture that I took from the oval that the model is being presented, with a path modeled around the monument textured with the old concrete floor tiles to give the model more dynamic.

Concept Development - Influence, reinterpretation of ideas, montage

This is the Jewish memorial in Berlin, I took the idea of monument and aesthetics from this architecture.

This is the "Lego" project by the "Big" company, I took inspirations of the block-like structure and block based terrain.

Concept Development - Re-invention

The Vitra Museum is more or less a controlled chaos, it takes a simple cube structure, deconstructed and meshed together to create a new form.

In this re-invention, I am going to examine and reinterpret its spatiality, symbolism and aesthetics, thus develop on its ideas to create a new structure.

First of all, I am going to reinterpret this architecture into a simpler purpose, yet close in nature with its original idea, a monument.

The first question is the blend nature of its materials, the simple white concrete with the grass terrain. It is simple and effective, but it lacks the monumental and explosive nature of a design museum. It lacks the modernistic touch.

Next is the purpose of its structure, the Museum, while delicate formed, serves no real symbolic purpose, I intend to remake this model into a momorial momument for the natural disaster, Haiti Earthquake.

Sorry, my other sketches are all too light colour to get scanned, I'll take photos of them later.

MaxScript - Bitmap Extrusion and ProBoolean

This is basically the same as the previous maxscript function, except me and Josh added a process to combine all boxes to create one single proboolean, thus reducing the amount of polygons. I also altered the extrusion value to the luminosity to create and more visible height difference.

Vitra Design Museum Model - Final Model and Comparison

MaxScript - Creating Terrain from a bitmap

This script uses a bitmap, then based on each pixtel, create a plane for each pixtel and extrude the plane according to its luminosity.
